Manage Generation
The Manage Generation panel controls automatic document generation for a project. From here you can pause and resume the process, choose the output format, and set how the generated documents are named.
Opening the panel
Select a project in the Projects Workflow panel, then click Manage generation in the Workflow section of the right-side action menu.
Pause and Auto toggle
The panel displays a status banner confirming that documents are generated automatically when new form responses arrive. Below the banner, a toggle lets you switch between two states:
- Auto — the default. Documents are created automatically by the hourly background trigger each time a new response is submitted.
- Pause — automatic generation is suspended. New responses are still collected, but no documents are created until you switch back to Auto.
When a project is paused, its status icon in the Projects Workflow panel changes from ▶ (play) to ⏸ (pause), making it easy to identify which projects are currently active at a glance.
Output format
Choose whether each response generates a Google Doc or a PDF. The setting applies to documents created from that point onward; documents already generated are not changed.
PDF output requires a PRO plan.
Document filename
Click Set pattern… to define how the generated documents are named. A dialog opens showing the form questions as clickable placeholders — click them to build the file name (for example Last name First name). If you leave it empty, the project name is used. The generation date is always added automatically at the end, and changes apply to documents generated from that point onward.
Document subfolders
Click Set pattern… next to Document subfolders to control where inside the Documents folder each file is saved. The same placeholder system is available — click a question to insert it as part of the path (for example Class Section will create a subfolder per class). If you leave it empty, all documents are saved directly in Documents/. The path is resolved at generation time using the values from each individual response, so every document can land in its own subfolder automatically.
💡 Tip: Pausing generation is useful when you need to update the template or adjust project settings without triggering new documents while changes are in progress. Once everything is ready, switch back to Auto and the next trigger run will process any pending responses.
