Environment

Environment

An environment is a Google Sheets spreadsheet linked to Doc Regia. It is the container that gathers a set of related projects and the folder structure where their documents are stored. Each environment is independent from the others.

What an environment contains

Every environment is bound to a dedicated folder in Google Drive, created automatically when the environment is set up:

  • 📁 Doc Regia – [Environment Name] — the main folder
  • 📁 Projects — destination for projects and their generated documents
  • 📁 Archive — for archived projects
  • 📊 Doc Regia — the dedicated spreadsheet that hosts the environment

All Doc Regia sessions must be started from the dedicated spreadsheet, opened via Extensions → Doc Regia → Open Doc Regia.

Active environment

Only one environment is active at a time — the one matching the currently open spreadsheet. The active environment determines which projects are visible in the Projects Workflow panel and where new documents are saved.

To switch environment, open the dedicated spreadsheet of the target environment from Google Drive and launch Doc Regia from there.

Creating a new environment

From the sidebar, in the Environments section, click + New. Doc Regia creates a new spreadsheet, the associated folder structure, and links it as a new environment. The new environment is empty and ready to host its first project.

💡 Tip: Use separate environments to keep contexts independent — for example one environment per team, one per client, or one per year. Projects in different environments never interfere with each other.

⚠️ Note: Always launch Doc Regia from the dedicated Doc Regia spreadsheet inside the environment folder. Opening the add-on from a different spreadsheet will not load the environment’s projects.
